One of the things I love most about food is that every recipe has a story.
This week, while working, I was given a recipe for a Juneteenth Breakfast Cake. According to the recipe notes, the cake was traditionally served during Juneteenth celebrations in Texas and often featured seasonal berries that were abundant during the month of June. The description explained that it represented freedom, justice, and celebration.
Reading those few sentences reminded me that culture lives in so many places. It lives in recipes passed from one generation to the next. It lives in music, art, family traditions, and community gatherings. It lives in the stories we choose to tell and preserve.
That is one of the reasons Juneteenth remains so important.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Today, the holiday serves as both a celebration and a reminder of the long journey toward freedom, equality, and opportunity.

Here on Cape Cod, we spent part of the day at the Osterville Library for a series of Juneteenth programs that brought people together through education, creativity, and conversation.
Families gathered for story time and a craft activity, creating space for children to learn about history in an age-appropriate and engaging way. Later in the day, Dr. Rodae led a discussion on the history of hip-hop, exploring the impact the genre has had on culture, storytelling, and social change.
Throughout the day, there was also a blood drive benefiting the American Red Cross, offering another opportunity for community members to support one another. Events spanned all over the Cape.
What stood out to me most was the spirit of community. People came together to learn, ask questions, share experiences, and celebrate a history that continues to shape our country.
Whether through a family recipe, a song, a work of art, or a community gathering, culture has a way of connecting us.
This Juneteenth, I found myself thinking about that breakfast cake and the story behind it. A simple recipe became a reminder that celebrations are often built on traditions, and traditions help keep history alive.
As we move forward, may we continue learning, listening, sharing our stories, and creating space for others to share theirs.
Happy Juneteenth.
