Eastham is often treated as a place people drive through on the way to Wellfleet or Provincetown. Give it an entire weekend, however, and you will find wooded trails, historic landscapes, Atlantic beaches, Cape Cod Bay sunsets and locally owned restaurants.
Friday Evening: Dinner at The Brickhouse
Begin with dinner at The Brickhouse on Route 6. The restaurant serves fresh seafood, Caribbean-inspired dishes and hand-cut steaks, giving visitors a menu that stretches beyond the usual Cape Cod seafood lineup. It is currently listed as open seven days a week, although seasonal hours should always be confirmed.
After dinner, head toward First Encounter Beach for sunset. Located on the Cape Cod Bay side of Eastham, the beach is especially memorable when low tide creates broad stretches of sand and tidal flats.
Saturday Morning: Explore Fort Hill
Start Saturday at Fort Hill, one of the Cape Cod National Seashore’s year-round walking areas. The landscape offers marsh views, birdwatching opportunities and access to the Red Maple Swamp area.
Bring water, bug protection and comfortable footwear. Move slowly enough to notice the wildflowers, birds and changes in the marsh rather than treating the trail as something to complete quickly.
Saturday Afternoon: National Seashore Country
Continue to the Salt Pond Visitor Center area and explore the Nauset Marsh Trail. The National Park Service describes the trail as a place for views across Nauset Marsh and Salt Pond.
From there, visit Nauset Light and the surrounding coastal area. Beach access, parking fees and safety conditions change seasonally, so check current National Seashore information before arriving.
Spend the late afternoon browsing Eastham’s roadside shops, markets and galleries. Part of the town’s charm comes from the small businesses scattered along Route 6 rather than concentrated in one downtown district.
Saturday: Art and Food
Visit the 1869 Schoolhouse Museum or Swift Daley House for a piece of Cape Cod's history and then make your way to Laura and Tony's Kitchen for delicious food and outdoor seating! Plus they have vegan options. Winning!
Sunday: A Short Walk and One Last View
Take an easy Sunday stroll on the Buttonbush or Doane trail. Buttonbush includes accessibility improvements for visitors with visual impairments, while Doane is suited to a short walk and picnic.
Before leaving, stop again at the bay or ocean. Eastham gives visitors both, and the change in landscape from one side of town to the other is part of what makes it worth an entire weekend.
